gpb@msdc.UUCP (George P. Burdell) (09/23/85)
So George started counting his hatches before they chickened. He had a
miserable time yesterday as he only picked 12 winners. He lost 9
games outright and 8 to his spread. For the year is 40-20-19=79 which
is one over .500. Like I warned you before: Don't use George if you
want to make some money. Hopefully during the latter part of the season,
he will improve his picking. Goodness, I'm beginning to sound like
Vince Dooley whining about his team. As far as the spread record goes,
George is doing much better. Here's his record:
Points 0-4 5-9 10-14 15-19 20-up Total
Week 4 10 5 5 2 7 29
Season 22 24 12 7 14 79
Week five in College Football 1985 finds a new number one in George's poll,
the Maryland Terps blanked a supposedly tough West Virginia team, 28-0, thus
vaulting them up the ladder. It seems that the Falcons of Air Force are
for real. That is if you can call for real whipping up on UTEP, Wyoming,
and more recently, Rice. They moved up further in George's Top Twenty
but face stiff competition at New Mexico this week. Another surprise
cracking the top twenty is Baylor. They aren't winning all of their games.
But they are not losing them as bad as predicted. So without further ado,
here is George's "creme de la creme" for week numero cinco: (Hmm, Spanish
and French in one sentance - not bad).
George's Top Twenty (or so) - Week five
1. Maryland Terrapins 13. Baylor Bears
2. Air Force Falcons 14. Louisiana State Tigers
3. Nebraska Cornhuskers 15. Mississippi State Bulldogs
4. Auburn Tigers 16. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
5. Ohio State Buckeyes 17. Southern Cal Trojans
6. Florida State Seminoles 18. Oklahoma State Cowboys
7. Oklahoma Sooners 19. Miami Hurricanes
8. Iowa Hawkeyes 20. Southern Methodist Mustangs
9. Michigan Wolverines 21. Alabama Crimson Tide
10. Brigham Young Cougars 22. UCLA Bruins
11. Florida Gators 23. Penn State Nittany Lions
12. Arkansas Razorbacks 24. Virginia Cavaliers
Here are George's slate of 32 picks for this week's games. Oklahoma finally
starts their season at Minnesota. Another interesting game this week will
be Maryland at Michigan. I think that Michigan is too tough for the Terps,
but because George ranks them number one, he has to go with the College Park
Turtles. I hope he's wrong about the Tech-Clemson game and I'm sure he is
wrong about the Penn State-Rutgers game.

That's it for this week. Look forward to your cards and letters about this
week's games. For those of you out there reading this for the first time,
if you would like a copy of George's previous postings, drop him a line
and we'll take care of you (my English teacher just loved that last sentance).
Until next week, hope your teams win out there (unless they reside in
Athens, GA). GOOOOOOO JACKETS !!!!!
