*** REPLACE THIS LINEBACKER WITH YOUR MESSAGE *** As a Canadian living in the United States I have a number of questions concerning Canadian football and the net: 1) Why have I not seen any discussion of the latest events in the CFL in the network? I know from net.sports.hockey that there are a number of Canadian subscribers. I would very much appreciate hearing details of rule changes, trades, rumors etc. 2) Will ESPN be televising any CFL games this year? I noticed that the season has begun with no indication from this network that games will be televised. Does any other American network plan to cover any games? 3) Who are the favorite teams to be in the Grey Cup this year according to the so-called experts? Thank you. Eric Johansen p.s. I have been a B.C. Lions fan since 1962 even though I grew up in Edmonton.

It is really too bad because they play some exciting football up north. I don't believe ESPN has any plans to carry CFL regular season games this year. They might broadcast the Grey Cup and if we're really lucky, the playoffs. I believe Toronto and British Columbia were the favorites to make this year's Grey Cup. British Columbia has kept up their end of the deal, they are in first place in the West. Something has happened to Toronto, however--I don't know what. They are well below .500. The Concordes are leading in the east. From memory the current standings are something like this: West East British Columbia Montreal Winnipeg Hamilton Edmonton Toronto Saskatchewan Ottawa Calgary That's pretty close to the way it is. I think Montreal is the only team above .500 in the East. Saskatchewan seems to be improved (based on an improved record). -- /\ /\ / \/^\ /\ /\/\/\ /^\ /\ /^/\^\ /\ Al Gates\^/ \/\ / \/ \/\/ \/\ / ^ \/ \^^^\ BDM Corporation \/\ /^\ / {seismo, rlgvax}!bdmrrr!gates \ /\ \ 7915 Jones Branch Drive\/ \ \ / \ / \ \ McLean, Virginia 22102 \ \ \/ \/ \ \ \ \ \^^\

Unfortunately I haven't been following the CFL as closely as usual this year, so I don't have much to tell you in the way of trades and rumours, but here's what I know anyway: EAST MONTREAL [6-4]: The big surprise of the year so far. They won their first three games but then they ran into BC. They've cooled off a little since then, but they still look like the best bet to take the division. I had a feeling before the season started that they would be greatly improved now that their young players have some experience. OTTAWA [4-6]: I figured this was a rebuilding year for the Riders, since they released a few players that had been key performers for them over the last few years, but they seem to be drastically improved. I think they've been the most consistent eastern team, so they may have a chance of winning the division. TORONTO [3-7]: QB Condredge Holloway has been injured practically all season, and the man who was supposed to back him up, Ricky Turner, was injured at the same time. They were respectable before Holloway got hurt, but before the season began I had a feeling that they would return to mediocrity this year; they're just not the same team that was the best in the league in 1983. I was surprised when they released their top runner from last year, Lester Brown, about 3 weeks into the season. He's playing well in Ottawa now, which probably has something to do with their improvement. HAMILTON [3-7]: Even though they were in the Grey Cup last year, we all knew they were far from being a serious contender for the championship, and the loss of Dieter Brock to the LA Rams doesn't help. They're actually doing better than most people expected. WEST B.C. [8-1]: Probably the experts' pick to win their first Grey Cup since the early 1960's. Their record speaks for itself. WINNIPEG [8-2]: They struggled a little at the start of the season, but they appear to be regaining their championship form. They'll give the Lions a good fight for first. EDMONTON [6-4]: They're destined for 3rd, no better, no worse. SASKATCHEWAN [4-6]: They were supposed to improve significantly this year, but so far they haven't much. CALGARY [2-7]: Apparently ex-Toronto QB Joe Barnes has been a disappointment. By the way, when the USFL was formed I thought that ESPN might stop showing CFL games. After all, two football leagues is enough, isn't it? I'm sure when the USFL folds in a year or two, ESPN will start showing the CFL again. -- Jeff Richardson, DCIEM, Toronto (416) 635-2073 {linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd}!utcsri!dciem!jeff {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!dciem!jeff
