Since this is net.sport.football and NOT net.sport.nfl, this announcement should be appropriate here: It's that time of year again, folks! Time to remember those real terms used in football, such as "bounce", "mark", "behind", "fifteen-meter penalty", and "ball up". This is where the stars have names such as Bobby Duckworth and Bruce Doole, and the teams come from places like Footscray and St. Kilda and have names like the Swans and Magpies. This is the real man's football, where quarters are a minimum of 25 minutes long and shoulder pads are something that Tina Turner wears. Yes, this is it -- the Grand Final of the Victoria Football League of Australia. This years game promises to be a great one -- a rematch of last year's final between the defending champion Essendon Bombers and the challenging Hawthorn Hawks. The game is Saturday, September 28 at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds. ESPN is broadcasting the game LIVE this weekend. On the west coast, it airs at 9pm on Friday, Sept. 27. The bounce is at 9:30. Don't forget the Foster's Lager. G'dday. Paul Brownlow -- ...."You're never alone with a schizophrenic."

> This is the real man's football, where quarters are a minimum of > 25 minutes long and shoulder pads are something that Tina Turner wears. Real man's football is the game both American and Australian rules football developed from, rugby. 40-45 minute halfs of continuous action. Aussie rules may look rough, but there is no aspect of it to compare to the brutality of a loose ruck. Also, there is much more tackling in rugby. I do like watching Aussie rules football, but it can't compare to a good rugby match. A clean international test match under good conditions is a sublime mixture of combat drill and ballet. Anyway, this has nothing to do with football, but I'll get net.rec.rugby going if it kills me. Bill Baker intelca!cadsys!bbaker
