Hello out there, The time has come in this college football season to begin thinking about "THE GAME". Now, depending on what part of the country you live in, the phrase "THE GAME" has a different meaning. For example, where I come from ( Michigan ), that phrase is pretty well defined - Michigan vs. Ohio State. If you're from Sooner country, though, it could only mean Oklahoma vs. the Huskers from Nebraska. Well, netters, it's time for you to vote for what you think is "THE GAME" in college football. I would like you to send your top five "GAME"s to me via e-mail ( please don't clutter up the net with your choices, but discuss- ions are always welcome ). I will periodically post the results of this survey. Please also include your reasoning as to why each game should be considered as "THE GAME". To start things off, here are my 5 choices for "THE GAME", with my reasoning for each ( these are in no particular order ): 1) Michigan - Ohio State Tremendous hatred here, especially since 1968 when Michigan upset OSU and blew the Buckeye's chances at the national championship. This game has decided the Big 10 *SO* many times in the last 15-18 years. It might not be quite as pivotal this year. 2) Oklahoma - Nebraska Along the same lines as #1 - great tradition, decides the Big Eight nearly every year. Some great memories from this one. As in #1, it may not be as important this year as in previous years. 3) U.S.C. - U.C.L.A. For all the same reasons as the first two. This one almost always has an effect on the final standings of the PAC-10. 4) Texas - Arkansas Same reasoning as 1-3. Big game in the SWC ( correct me if I'm wrong ). 5) Notre Dame - U.S.C. Plenty of tradition here. The only non-conference game I listed. Has lost a lot of luster in the last few years. No flames about these choices, please - I know there are many great rival- ries I failed to mention ( eg. Pitt-Penn State, 'Bama-Auburn, Mich. State- Michigan, Mich. State-Notre Dame, Oklahoma-Okla. State, Slippery Rock-Shipp- ensburg ;-), and on and on... ). My criteria are: Has the game been played on a continuous basis for at least 10-15 years, and does it usually decide something? I'm sure a lot of games I will recieve will be for state bragging rights ( eg. Pitt-Penn State, etc. ), but that's great - what is college football all about, anyhow? Some games determine the posession of a "trophy" for the next year ( eg. Michigan-Minnesota for the "Little Brown Jug", Purdue- Indiana(?) for "The Old Oaken Bucket"(?), etc. ). These are also great choices. I'll accept your votes until about 10/31, or when response dies off. I will then post final results, and then we shall see which college gridiron classic is chosen as "THE GAME".
