[net.sport.football] BIG TEN VS PAC TEN

ekblaw@uiucdcs.CS.UIUC.EDU (11/01/85)

Obviously this poor deluded fool would prefer to antagonize than to be
informative. As I read and write to this notesfile for a purpose, let's
shatter some myths:

The Big Ten last won the Rose Bowl in the mid seventies (I don't remember the
exact year), so it hasn't been all that long. Too, despite the last few
years of a consecutive Pac 10 streak, the Big Ten still leads in career
victories in the Rose Bowl. NOW Who's Zooming Who? Too, the records of the
Pac 10 rep in the Rose Bowl has been worse than the record of the Big Ten rep
for the last five years! The Big Ten team goes in expecting it to be easy,
and it hasn't been. Once reason is hhome field advantage. For the last five
years, the Pac 10 rep in the Rose Bowl has been USC or UCLA, both really close
to the Rose Bowl site. I know for a fact that the Big Ten does NOT receive
the selling rights to half of the seats in the stadium (a third if we're lucky,
usually a fourth to a sixth of them), so the majority of spectators are Pac 10
fans. And since that d*mn stadium is like an echo chamber, crowd noise is a
big factor. If the Pac 10 fans would be good sportsman and let the teams
themselves battle the game, perhaps the Pac 10 would not have enjoyed its
"dynasty" of Rose Bowl victories in the last few years. At least the Big Ten
can say that they had huge streaks of consecutive victories at the Rose Bowl
when good and proper sportsmanship was in vogue, so the Big Ten team beat the
Pac 10'er fair and square. I doubt the same thing can be said of the Pac 10
presently.

The last time the Big 10 won the Rose Bowl was when Michigan destroyed
Washington 23-6 in the 1980 ( I think ) game. Michigan also should have
won the year before against USC, if it wasn't for Charles White's "phantom"
touchdown ( the fumble on the 3 yard line ). I agree that the Pac-10 has
enjoyed a home-field advantage in recent years, but no matter this year.
The Big 10 rep ( whether it be Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan, or Illinois )
should handily defeat the Pac-10 rep. There is a reason for the Big 10
having three Top 10 teams - it is the best conference in college football
this season, the Big Eight and SEC notwithstanding; and I'm sure the bowl
games will bear that out.

As for this last paragraph... what a cry baby. The reason big Ten teams lose
is because they can't handle a passing offense. Last season all four Pac Ten
teams that went to bowl games won! Also, after watching a couple Ohio State
games on TV your comment about croud noise and fair play falls on deaf ears :-)

Next time I suggest that you buy some good ripe grapes.

I believe the Big Ten has won a game in the 80's; I believe
Washington was the victim, but I'm not sure.

Big deal. The Big Ten outclassed the Pac-10 then, now the balance
has shifted the other way, methinks.

Washington has also played in several games lately-- I think at
least once in the last five years, and has won most of those games.
So I don't see a home field advantage argument always ringing true.
Besides, whether you like it or not, the biggest reason for Pac 10
dominance is that the Pac 10 simply has better teams. What does
your point about records show? The Pac 10 may be a bit better
balanced conference at this point.

Prove it!! I know for a fact that the Pac 10 receives no more
tickets than the Big 10 does. If you think the Big 10 is
underrepresented, you should tour the parking lot before the game
and see all of the motor homes with Midwest plates on them. Amazing!!

Come on, be real. Fans are part of the sport. Good sportsmanship?
This is just sour grapes. Having attended two Rose Bowl games in
person, I can testify there is just about as much crowd noise for the
Big 10 representative as there is for the Pac 10 representative.
Face it, your teams got beat by better teams. Blaming it on the
fans is just ridiculous. If the Big 10 teams feel they can just
show up and win, they've got another thing coming.

I've got a great idea. Why doesn't someone just go ahead and create the
newsgroup net.sport.football.ekblaw so that Robert can have his own
little place to post his articles. I, for one, would not subscribe.
