[net.sport.football] Denver fans are pig spit

mcp@druor.UUCP (PaughMC) (11/14/85)

To those who think that Denver fans are pig spit (or worse):

PLEASE, do not get the impression that all Broncos fans are like
the fool that threw the snowball! I have yet to talk to anyone
here in Denver that thinks the snowball incident was good.
I have also seen worse incidents at other stadiums around the
NFL. I agree that the officials should have called a penalty
on the play and the 49'ers would have had first and goal.

The City and the Broncos organization have announced that extra
security forces will be at the games when there is snow in the
stands. Anyone caught throwing snowballs (or anything else) onto
the field will be taken away from the game and prosecuted by the
City. The Broncos also said that any season ticket holders caught
throwing things will lose their season tickets. Now, to most of
these people their season tickets mean more than life, and it
takes about a lifetime to get from the bottom of the waiting
list to the top.

I know that the above actions do not make up for what happened
Monday night. I also know that, if the Broncos go anywhere this
year, this game and the snowball incident will be cited as a
turning point. This will be especially true if they should win
the AFC West by one game, or if the 49'ers should lose their
division by one game.

But, as I said above, please do not base your opinions of Denver
or the football fans here on one asshole.

I agree and disagree with the above statement:
AGREE => Yes, you can't blame 75K fans for the action of one.
DISAGREE => There must have been quite a few Bronco fans that approved
(at the time at least), or the fans sitting near him in the
stands would have turned him in.

Yes, fan interference is getting out of hand. Take Seattle, for example.
In this case you can blame ALL Seahawk fans (or a high percentage of
them anyway). They clearly and boisterously and consistently approve of
the disrupting the game by making so much noise that the other team cannot
hear their own signals being called.

How 'bout this for a penalty against fans when a crowd is disrupted:
Penalize the team one home game. E.g., the Broncos are playing in
Kingdome, and the fans interfere by making an unreasonable amount
of noise. Next season, both Bronco-Seahawk games are played in
Denver; the Seahawks get 7 home games that year and the Broncos get
  9. It does penalize the team somewhat for the actions of their fans,
but it SIGNIFICANTLY penalizes the fans. Of course, there should be a
significant amount of warning given to the fans.

I can vouch (indirectly) for that. My sister moved to Denver from
Minneapolis a couple years ago. She says that she has never seen
fans like Bronco fans. During a Bronco game, the streets in Denver are
deserted; the crime rate goes down to almost zero (even the crooks in
Denver make the Broncos their #1 priority).

I am a Niner/Raider fan, so Monday's result was doubly-disappointing to
me. However, blown ref calls, weather, fan interference (unfortunately)
are all part of the game, just like "the way the ball bounces". If a team
(e.g., the Niners) significantly outplays another, a few breaks rarely make
the difference. For close games, you've got to expect that you'll lose
some due to "luck". Such things tend to balance out in the long run.
The Niners clearly did not "sigificantly outplay" the Broncos on Monday.
