New York football fans unite. The Jets and the Giants are
going to the Superbo.. err playoffs. For only the second
time in history have both NY teams made the postseason
simultaneously. The first time was 1982 when the Jets lost
the AFC title game to Miami, and I believe the Giants lost
the wildcard game that year. Sundays 37-10 win by the NY
Jets over the AFC Central champs (ha ha) Cleveland Browns
propelled them into the AFC wildcard game against the New
England Patriots. The NY Giant win (a la Joe Morris) over
the Pittsburgh Steelers in the last game of the regular
season, landed them into the NFC wildcard game against the
defending Superbowl champion Forty Niners. Giant Stadium
here in New Jersey is hosting both wildcard games.
The Jets finished the regular season with an 11-5 record. I
think they finally proved to the football world that they
are as good as they think they are. This Saturday (12-28)
the Jets and Patriots square off in the AFC wildcard game at
Jets. These two teams split during the regular season each
winning on there own turf. The Jet defense is big, mean,
tough, and stingy. If they can get in Tony Easons face and
contain him in the pocket, the New England offense will be
shut down. The Jets weak area is there offensive line. They
have given up a league high 62 sacks. When put up against a
strong defensive front, the Jets pass protection usually
collapses. I think the Jets should run Freeman McNeil early
in the game and often. This will help hold the New England
linebackers and set up the play-action pass. The score, NY
Jets 13, New England 10.
If the Giants are going to defeat the 49ers they must first
defeat there most lethal enemy, themselves. The Giants are
masters at self-destruction, especially in the fourth
quarter. The Giants must come into this game with guns
blazing. They must score 24 to 28 points in the first half
while keeping the Niners down. This should give them a big
enough cushion in case the final quarter proves to be
another disastrous one for the Giants. Overall I think the
Giants have the edge in this game. The Niners have beaten
the Giants twice in the playoffs. This adds a revenge factor
to the Giants game plan. The score NY Giants 31, Forty
Niners 28.nyssa@abnji.UUCP (nyssa of traken) (12/27/85)
The last time both NY teams made the playoffs was 1981, when the
Jets lost at Shea to Buffalo, and the Giants lost at San
Francisco after winning in Philadelphia.
In 1982, the Giants missed an 8 team playoff field by finishing
3-6.
