A Warner Wolf-type Boo of the Week goes to:
ABC, NBC, and CBS
for continually referring to those words and numbers
at the bottom of the TV screen as "graphics".
What is graphic about
YARDS
Bears Offense 200
Giants Defense 100 ?
Before baseball starts calling the foul pole the fair pole,
Warner, why don't you sportscasters invent a better name
for those words and numbers than GRAPHIC!jimb@ISM780B.UUCP (01/09/86)
The usage of graphic I find disconcerting, too. However, the usage is
derived from "graphic arts"; i.e., the words and numbers are produced by
(electronic) graphic arts techniques, as opposed to live video. In graphic
arts lingo, such a production is called a "graphic."
The sportscasters seem to have picked up on this specialized use of the term.
(Sportscaster: What is it? Graphic Artist: It's a graphic.
Sportscaster: Oh.)
Unfortunate.
