I have been sitting back and tremendously enjoying O.U.'s 6th National championship and the extra income that their WELL EARNED Orange Bowl victory brought me, but I feel I must comment on some of the statements made recently on the net, most of them by Jim Brunet and Eddy Lor. OU whipped Penn State fair and square and DESERVES the national championship!!! It was also a very exciting game to watch, even if I am somewhat biased. Regarding a proposed playoff among the top 8 teams of the 1985 season, OU would win the playoff handily and UCLA wouldn't make it passed the first round, especially if their first opponent was OU. Regarding the OU vs. ucla game next year - a passing game will take OU's defense apart?? Don't make me laugh!! OU won't have Casillas next year, but ucla won't have Whalen, so their losses are about equal? Jeez, Whalen wouldn't even have started for OU this year!! Someone pointed out that OU lost to Miami while ucla won the big games they had to win - did they forget that OU beat Texas, SMU, Minnesota, Penn State, and Okla. State (who BEAT Washington) while also stomping Nebraska, as they pointed out?? I'd sure like to see ucla go 6-0 against those same 6 teams. I will continue to enjoy OU's season this year, and look forward to a second consecutive national championship (and beating ucla) next year!! Boomer Sooner

> OU whipped Penn State fair and square and DESERVES the > national championship!!! No question! I never doubt Oklahoma's supremacy under the current poll system and their dominance in the Orange Bowl game. All I am questioning is: should Oklahoma and Penn State deserve to play for the honor as "the best team in the country"? If we really deserved one national championship game, we should have taken the two best (non-probational) teams in the regular season: Iowa and Miami. Once again, sweeping the Big Eight and beating teams like Texas (this is not the Longhorns of 83), Minnesota, and SMU (this is a 6-5 SMU, not the one with Dickerson and James) are not as difficult as you think! > Regarding a proposed playoff among the top 8 teams of > the 1985 season, OU would win the playoff handily and > UCLA wouldn't make it passed the first round, especially > if their first opponent was OU. Good, just by defeating their pretender opponents, what make you think OU would murder the other powerhouses had such a playoff existed? > Regarding the OU vs. ucla game next year - a passing game > will take OU's defense apart?? Don't make me laugh!! Sure you can't laugh. In the past three years, Oklahoma scheduled only two national contenders who could pass (West Virginia in 1983 and Miami in 1985.) Ironically, Oklahoma lost both games. A passing game will NOT take OU's defense apart?? They were supposed to be a great defense. > OU won't have Casillas next year, but ucla won't have > Whalen, so their losses are about equal? These are unjustifiable thinkings which do not deserve any comments! > Boomer Sooner For all Boomer Sooners, why don't you just enjoy your national championship? I never doubt Oklahoma's ranking in the polls. I just said they are not the best team. -- Eddy Lor ...!(ihnp4,ucbvax)!ucla-cs!lor lor@LOCUS.UCLA.EDU Computer Science Department, UCLA

>If we really deserved one national championship game, >we should have taken the two best (non-probational) teams in the >regular season: Iowa and Miami. Wrong!! The Orange Bowl had one of the two best (non-probational) teams in the country - OU! Granted, Miami probably had a better team than Penn St., but you can't take anything away from Penn St.'s record (11-0). Iowa? Not a chance. ucla proved that. >Once again, sweeping the Big Eight and beating >teams like Texas (this is not the Longhorns of 83), >Minnesota, and SMU (this is a 6-5 SMU, not the one with Dickerson >and James) are not as difficult as you think! And I suppose sweeping the Pac-10 is difficult? Maybe for ucla but it wouldn't have been for OU or Nebraska. > For all Boomer Sooners, why don't you just enjoy your >national championship? I never doubt Oklahoma's ranking in >the polls. I just said they are not the best team. But that is where you are WRONG, Eddy Lor. They ARE the best college football team in the country!! And that's not just my opinion and the opinion of all Sooner fans across the country, but also the opinion of the college coaches, sports writers, the Scripps-Howard News Service and Sports Illustrated!! But maybe you know something they don't? Don't worry, we are enjoying the national championship!! Boomer Sooner!

Maybe for ucla >but it wouldn't have been for OU or Nebraska. It is! Pac-10 is a much more balanced conference than the Big-8. The winner of Oklahoma/Nebraska had no trouble sweeping the Big 8, but keep dreaming for sweeping the Pac-10. BTW, the top four teams of the Pac-10 are not even as strong as the top four teams of the SEC and the Big-10. As I asked before, had Oklahoma been a member of SEC and played three of Auburn, Florida, Alabama, Tennesse, and Georgia, or a member of Big 10 and played Iowa, Ohio State, and Michigan, do you really think the Sooners can sweep the conference and get a chance to play in the title game? I know you will say "yes" because your opinions on college footbal are not even as honest and realistic as Dennis Doubleday's or Ron Vaughn's, two other sooner diehards. Once again, I never doubt Oklahoma's dominance against Penn St. I just claim their regular season schedule and record are not adequate proof that they deserve a 50% shot at the national title. Again, just based on the regular season, even Miami is more deserved to play in the title game than Oklahoma. >> For all Boomer Sooners, why don't you just enjoy your >>national championship? But maybe >you know something they don't? If I can vote in the poll, I would have voted for Oklahoma also, because they got the best RECORD under this system. However, I always claim that this system is not the best way to determine the best team in the nation. We can't get the best team without a playoff system, as in all other sports. Too bad, maybe I am the only person who knows that! -- Eddy Lor ...!(ihnp4,ucbvax)!ucla-cs!lor lor@LOCUS.UCLA.EDU Computer Science Department, UCLA
