[net.rec.boat] Boundary waters

iasia (04/14/83)

Was in the boundary waters about three years ago. A couple of Items that
I remember.
1. Some of the roads that lead to the water are very rough and narrow.
a fourwheel drive would be best for getting in. Definity not
	roads for low cars.

2. A good map and a compass are essentials.( at least they were to us )
We got a bit lost on Snowbank Lake (first one) because we didn't
appreciate the scale of the map. After that we did all right.

3. Maps can be deceiving. distances of one mile look and sound small on a map.
If you've done a lot of canoeing this probably won't bother you.

4. A good bug repellent is an absolute must. The horseflys will get you in
the daytime the mosquitos at dawn and dusk.

5. Cans and bottles are forbidden. In general you're expected to carry out
 	what you take in.

6. It is absolutely beautiful up there.
It is a long drive from the Chicago area but worth it.
7. We used DUANES outfitters near ELY. It seemed expensive at the time,
but they had everything you could possibly want to rent or buy. We were
students then and attempting to spend as little as possible so it might
not be as expensive as we thought it was.
