[net.rec.boat] MSDs and what have you done about them

jgs@mhtsa.UUCP (01/08/84)

The head on my boat is "all natural" (sea water in, sea water +extras out)
and has been that way since I installed it on the boat. The boat previously
lived on the great lakes and had a porta-potty which I couldn't abide by...

My problem is, with the recent changes in legislation regarding boardings
for "safety inspections" (as I read it, they check for fire exts and vests,
look for drugs, and fine heads like mine (what the last two have to do
with safety...I dunno)) I am getting nervous traveling with an "illegal"
MSD.

However, my boat is not large (29 ft with lots of overhangs) and I don't
want to devote to much space to tanks and the like, nore do I like the
idea of dispelling to many chemicals into the waters I sail and swim in.

The Raritan Electrasan has seemed to be the nicest in terms of size except
that it draws out 1.5 amp hrs for every flush...(that adds up over a weekend
with 3-4 people out) and costs on the order of $400...
				any suggestions?
