[net.rec.boat] VHF radios

pec@hou4b.UUCP (P.E.Costello) (04/06/85)

I would like to purchase a new marine VHF radio for my sailboat
and would like the advice of someone who might know what to look for
and what to watch-out for when buying. I have heard reports that radios
with mechanical switches for channel selection are prone to contact
corosion and failure. Should I stay away from Liquid Crystal Displays?
What else should be considered?

There are two important sections in a VHF, the transmitter and receiver.
Almost all transmitters are the same (25 / 1 watt). Receiver is different
(if you can't hear them what good is it to talk to them?). You should
look aSENSITIVITY: this should be less than .35 mv at 20dB. The second
measurement is ADJACENT CHANNEL REJECTION: it should be less than (-) 60dB
(note the negative number). The speaker should have at least 4 watts output.

The number of channels, the type of switching, size and other gizmos are
up to you (where do you keep it, what do you want to do with it, etc.). The
only other thing I can say is not to get a crystal controlled set, it will
cost you in the future. Before buying see what channels you will need
in you area.
