You want a boat that holds two people and gear comfortably, and is cheap? Depends on what you call comfortable. I once saw three adults, an infant, a German shepherd, and two ice chests on a Sunfish clone. Actually, we had to rescue them when a cold front came through (" We were sailing downwind just fine, but how do you make it go back upowind?") For a combination of thrills and space, you ought to think about a catamaran. My freinds would be surprised to hear me say that, because I'm not too hot on them myself. Also check into your local racing club. Even if you don't plan to race, the racers will get a boat that is well suited for your area, and there will be a lot of them around, making for good prices on the used market. For example, Coronado 15's are real popular here. I once had a boat called a Lido Capri. The Lido is 14 feet but very wide, which makes it much better for putting freinds in than a Lazer. The Lido Capri is a version that has a 300 pound lead keel, very unusual for a boat that size. It had no centerboard trunk, which made it more rommy yet, and it was virtually impossible to turn over, in any kind of wind. It was also slow.
