My Flying Dutchman has no bailers, yet it is fully self bailing, even at a standstill. It simply has a full double bottom such that after a capsize, the bottom of the cockpit is higher than the outside water level. As a result, the entire transom is cut out so that the water simply runs out. The boat is empty after a capsize in about 20-30 seconds. The main advantage is not after capsizing, but during heavy air where you have continuous spray into the FD. The speed of the self bailing is such that one sails with about 20-40 pounds less water in the boat than a conventional design with bailers. -- Guido Bertocci AT&T Bell Labs Holmdel, NJ ...!ihnp4!houxm!twitch!guido
