I'd like to hear from anyone who has cruised the Apostle Islands area. In particular, what wind conditions are like in late spring-early summer, best places to go, good bareboat outfits, etc. And, ditto the above for the 1000 Islands area. -- Thanks! Rich ihnp4!hound!ganns

I can not recommend the 1000 Islands area enough. I love it.
Lots of sites to see and a variety of places to stop. One word
of caution is that (at least on the american side) the towns
only make money in the summer. Therefore, their prices are VERY
high (especially restaurants).
Sailing the 1000 isle area can be an interesting experience.
There is approx. a 1 to 3 knot current in the seaway and in
light air conditions with big steam ships cruising through this
can lead to some periods of concern. Make sure you have plenty
of fuel with you when you leave the dock (and that the engine is
in fine working order).
I have several places that I like to visit. I always stop in
Kingston Ontario. This is a nice town. Lots of shops to check
out, etc. Gananaque is also a nice place to check out as well.
On the American side, Alexandria bay is probably one of the more
popular areas in the summer time. There tends to be more night
life here than anyware else that I have visited up there.
BTW, there some islands that you can stay at. I usually spend my
first night at Calumet island. There a couple of small docks
there but you need to get there early to secure one. I usually
end up anchoring off shore, but it's deep enough to pull the bow
up to shore to step off(our boat draws 5 feet).
I'm not sure where the best place is to charter a boat. We sail
out of Henderson Harbor, N.Y. There is a place that charters
boats in Henderson (R.C. Yachts). They have some very nice
C&C35's as well as some nonsuch boats as well. This may be of
interest to you since Henderson bay is a VERY pretty area. Also,
Henderson is only a 1 day sail from the 1000 island area (1/2
day with good winds!)
If you decide to take this route I would suggest that you sail
around Henderson bay and stop in Sacketts harbor and visit the
local museum. They have an interesting display of items from the
battle of 1812. BTW, in mid July they have a fireworks show in
Sacketts and a re-enactment of the battle of 1812 with cannons
(on shore) firing live (grapefruits) at 3 ships as they make
passes by the shore.
Finally, the winds. From what I have seen, Spring and Fall are
the times when you can count on the best wind. In the Summer,
the winds tend to be light with a distinct on shore breaze in
the morning and off shore breaze in the evening.
Hope this helps.
