Indeed, according to the most recent tabulation by the IRS (for the tax year 1980), there was only one taxpayer with income over a million dollars who also collected unemployment. Nonetheless, it seems a bit odd that it was tax-free income for him/her. The tax structure is sufficiently progressive that taxation of unemployment income is most likely to hit hardest on fairly high-income couples where one spouse in unemployed part of the year.

I can see some minimal logic in this but it would also seem to screw a lot of the folks who really can't find a job. I suspect that the disadvantage would outweigh any benefit. The liberal wing will "go to town" with this one... Stuart
