[net.politics] taxing the unemployed

rhm (11/27/82)

Indeed, according to the most recent tabulation by the IRS (for the
tax year 1980), there was only one taxpayer with income over a million
dollars who also collected unemployment.

Nonetheless, it seems a bit odd that it was tax-free income for him/her.

The tax structure is sufficiently progressive that taxation of
unemployment income is most likely to hit hardest on fairly high-income
couples where one spouse in unemployed part of the year.

Just read on the newswire that Reagan is thinking of taxing the
unemployed (in order to make it less desirable to be unemployed).
I can see some minimal logic in this but it would also seem to
screw a lot of the folks who really can't find a job. I suspect
that the disadvantage would outweigh any benefit.

The liberal wing will "go to town" with this one...
