[This is a followup to an article in net.women; I posted it here because I feel that the abortion debate doesn't belong in net.women] The U. S. Supreme Court was pretty perceptive when it defined a fetus as having life or potential life (they admitted they didn't know which), but not as being a "person" as the word is used in the 14th amendment. I would guess that most of the 53% of the nation who reject the extreme positions on abortion agree with the court's reasoning that a fetus is not a human being, but deserves some protection because it has the poten- tial to become one.
