[net.politics] The wider issue of Japanese Internment

tom (03/23/83)

I am under the impression that most of the concentration camps used on U.S.
citizens of Japanese descent during WWII are still in existence and can still
be used for similar purposes if the President declares a state of emergency
and for the McCarren (sp?) act to be in effect. Does anyone have more
information on this?

During the late 60's and early 70's there were rumours that
Nixon would use the camps for internment of war protestors and
other undesirable long hair types.

Having talked to friends of my father who were actually in the
camps, I find it quite amazing how close we came to
exterminating Americans of Japanese descent. I wonder what
would have happened if the Japanese had successfully landed
troops on the West coast.
