Let me state right off the bat that I am NOT a NAZI! I'm NOT EVEN ANTI-SEMITIC! Some will assume, due to my question, that I am one of the above. This is just not true. I just want to find something out. Where does the celebrated "6,000,000 Jews were slaughtered in WWII" figure come from. I have not seen this on the net, or anywhere else for that matter. Does anyone know of a reliable source for this figure? It seems to be one of the "Oh, everyone knows that, it's common knowledge," type statements. I'd like a source. PLEASE respond by electronic mail. I don't want to see a deluge of "Oh, everyone knows that," responses on the net. If you want to flame me on the net, that's another matter. I will read responses that are 10 lines or fewer long (on my 80 character wide terminal). I will summarize reasonable responses (without reference to respondents' identities) to the net in a few weeks or so. Once again, please don't get the JDL out after me. joe wilson uucp: ...decvax!duke!mcnc!ncsu!uvacs!jnw CSnet: jnw@uvacs Arpa: jnw.uvacs@udel-relay

Everyone knows that 20,000,000 Russians were killed in WWII, and that the ratio of Jews to Russians killed was 3:10. Hence, 6,000,000 Jews were killed. Why is this stupid question asked anyway? jeff

In (tesla.30) Jeff expresses disdain that the question, "How many etc" was asked, because "everybody knows that 20,000,000 Russians died, and the ratio of Russian to Jewish dead was 10:3". Well Jeff, it is hard to know how serious to take you. I recently read in a book entitled "Stalin's Secret War", that it wasn't until 1965 that the Soviet Union claimed 20,000,000 war dead. Apparently, prior to that, they only claimed seven million war dead. (The author, a descendant of Tolstoy, suggests the second figure might reflect the number of military casualties, and the first figure includes inhabitants of the Gulag who were worked to death during the war, or used as decoys or human mine-detectors.) Many Jewish communities in Europe have "Yizkor" (memorial) books listing the names of those Jews in the town who were murdered in the Holocaust. These names are not fabricated; they are accompanied by prewar photographs and articles about the people -- what they did and how they died. Not all of them died in the extermination camps; many were murdered in their home towns. If you want facts and figures, two sources are the YIVO Institute in New York City and the Yad Vashem archives in Jerusalem. If you still doubt, ask your Jewish acquaintances, many of whom lost relatives in the Holocaust. Any Jew who has done genealogical research, as I have, can show the branches of the family that were wiped out. Dave Ellis Bell Labs, Piscataway, NJ ...!harpo!npoiv!npois!houxm!5941ux!dje

That last submission was meant to be under *this* Subject heading. It's the first day back from vacation; my fingers are tired. Sorry. arwen
