I do not find it surprising that US liberal politicians are behaving in an inconsistent and sometimes immoral fashion with respect to Latin America. If one reads Philip Agee's book INSIDE THE COMPANY: A CIA DIARY (enter- taining as well as instructive) and analyzes US foreign policy in Latin America since that period (early 60's), one finds a 100% consistent record of support for the slimiest, most repressive fascists. As a result of this, the middle ground where liberals flourish has, unfortunately, been largely cut away. A Latin American with any measure of political involvement realistically has only two options - to get in bed with the existing repressive governments and their American backers, or to take up the banner of revolution. We in North America should be thankful that we are not faced with this kind of choice. I feel that in the long run the revolutionaries canot possibly lose, but I'm afraid that there'll be a lot of blood over the dam before that happens. A lot of US 'liberal' politicians should realize this and face the fact that by trying to help the various tinpot dictators hold back the course of history, their hands are becoming stained with that blood.
