This article is concerned with politics *and* religion, so I
guess I'll just stick it here . . .

I was just talking to a Greek (from the country of Greece -- he's
*not* in a fraternity) and he mentioned a scandal concerning the
Freemasons in Europe a few years ago. According to him, it was
revealed that many top government officials in many coun-
tries were Masons, and they were forced to resign. Also accord-
ing to him, the Masons have their own secret religion con-
nected with Satanism. Did anyone hear the details? Why were
these member forced to resign their offices? Is Freemasonry
connected to Satanism??? (Sounds really weird, but I'm going to
suspend judgement for a while.)

To add a little info: I've talked to two foreign students (Greek and Su-
danese) who are convinced that Masons are out to take over the world (or
in fact already have!), and that they are bunch of criminals (any Mason
must aid any other Mason, regardless of whether the enterprise in ques-
tion is legal or illegal; Masons ritually murder those who are perceived
as violating their oaths). I've also received mail in which someone
stated that an Iranian held the same general beliefs (Masons started
World War II, apparently. "Tora, tora, tora" is a Masonic greeting,
mayhaps?) According to my informants, only America accepts Masons; else-
where, they must be secret. This info seems to be reasonable, judging
from a sample of 3. Well, furriners, what say you? Anyone else have
any such info?

I think this must be a reference to the P2 scandal in Italy, where a
large fraction of the Italian power structure was found to belong to a secret
lodge. 60 Minutes covered this recently in connnection with the collapse of
Banco Ambrosiano and the suicide/murder of its head, who was a member of P2.
Since Banco Ambrosiano had very close ties to the Vatican, conspiritorial
types can have a field day.

Although I have no idea why the people in question were
forced to resign their offices, I can shed a little light on
freemasonry. It is in NO WAY related to satanism. Anyone who
says that simply doesn't know what they're talking about. However,
it IS a secret organization. True masons (there are also "co-masons")
are men only. I am not a mason, but many people in my family are.
>From what I have read and heard, the organization is involved at
some level with what some might think was 'magic', but might better
be described as 'ritualism'. These people VERY strongly support
one another. Members are often as close as family. For those of
you that don't already know, "Shriners" are masons - this group
is the one that has raised millions of dollars for childrens
hospitals (not exactly the sign of a Satanic organization, is it?).
