[net.politics] Central and South America again

here is a question that has been glossed over but not directly asked.
What do you do about alliances these days? Some countries need them.
The US may not. Does one have a moral obligation to keep one's alliances?

WW2 reads like "The US vs the German menace" in movies these days.
My father and grandfather, both of whom were alive and rather active
during WW2 (my father was too young to go to war, and my grandfather
too old, but they were both involved in the civilian end of the war effort)
have a rather different opinion.

The US was, in their opinion, a bunch of johnny-come-latelies who didnt
have the guts to do what was morally obvious for years while the rest of
the world fought and died. Clearly, deciding what was morally obvious is
a difficult decision, and very easier to do in hindsight, but still...

Suppose the Soviets invaded Canada, or England, or Norway. Are you guys
going to be there? Should we count on you?
