[net.politics] KAL-007 and the "Hot-line"

jrc@ritcv.UUCP (James R Carbin) (09/07/83)

If we (the U.S.) were informed by the Japanese prior to the actual shooting
down of Kal-007 during the 2.5 hours that it was tracked by Russian Migs,
I have to ask why "we" didn't utilize the hotline to notify the Russians
of the problem and tell them to keep cool. Of course this would have
required that the U.S. received notification in time to do something.
Whether we did or not will most likely never be publicly disclosed.

Before someone <flames> me, don't interpret this consideration of a
possible scenario as an excuse for the action of the U.S.S.R. In no
possible way can their actions be considered anything less than what
they were (and still are): brutal, dastardly, etc.
