[net.politics] Nuclear Moonies

Who are these characters in the airports who hand out pamphlets on
nuclear power? A colleague of mine at the labs was returning from a
conference in San Francisco recently and was accosted in the Denver
airport. They tried to sell him some obscene bumper stickers about
Jane Fonda and when he objected, they started shouting things like "Oh,
you just got in from San Francisco. You must be one of them Faggots!"
and so on...

When he told this story, other people claimed to have had similar
experiences. My office mate use to have a full beard, and while
walking through an airport, these people tried to get his attention.
He just ignored them and walked by, prompting them to begin calling him
a "hippie" (where have these guys been for the last 15 years!) and
making various rude comments. I cannot believe the power companies are
behind this negative publicity.

Someone recently mentioned they might be connected with a radical right
organization serving Lyndon LaRouche.

By the way, I don't really want to argue about Nuclear Power. I am not
anti-nuke.

Indeed. The people who give out the pro-nuke stuiff at airports
are from the "US Labor Party". As far as I can see they are the closest
thing to an American Nazi Party except the American Nazi Party. They
claim that the Queen of England is behind the International Zionist drug
trade -- this is not an exaggeration, I have read the handouts! Lyndon
Larouche employs a notable security/harrassment/muscle force who take care
of former members who mouth off. There was a series on the in the New York
Times is 1979 or 1980, and many other articles I'm sure.

Regarding obnoxious people who solicit you in airports:

I actually don't mind people whose approach is "would you like
to donate to ..."; I just say "no" and that generally ends it.

I really dislike people who instead say "Here have this wonderful
{flower,book,button,...} just because we like you so much. Now
wouldn't you like to help us carry on our important efforts to ...".
  Again, I have just learned to say "no", but it is a bit more difficult;
they tend to act like you *owe* it to them.

Therefore one of my favorite scenes from "Airplane" was when Robert Stack
entered the airport and was accosted by various such groups and simply
used chop-socky (see recent Joe Bob review) on them. Sort of a parody
on all the Bruce Lee fight scenes. I suspect it is every air traveler's
secret fantasy.

LaRouche also, in his more modest moments, has described himself as
the American Lenin. The group's pedigree comes from the '68 SDS convention,
believe it or not. They don't seem to fit too well in the political
spectrum.

About their pro-nuclear stance: beware. They also run a front magazine
called "Fusion" which often features articles by that well-known fusion
expert Lyndon LaRouche. Seems to be a fund-raiser targeted at naive
pro-nuclear right-wingers.
