[net.politics] ATTENTION DAVE SHERMAN - KING...PEACEFUL?

diy@sb1.UUCP (DENNIS YOUNG) (10/21/83)

Dave, got your message this morn, and I will work on it for you. Please
give me your mail path, I couldn't get it from your letter, else I would
have mailed it to you rather than post it here.

Quickly though, I can tell you that I was making up an example, but it was not
far from the truth. (Guess that makes ME guilty of distorting facts, huh?:-) )

Ever heard of Rosa Parks? Well, I'm a little fuzzy about dates and cities, but
what I do remember is 100% fact. IN my hometown of Charleston, SC, it was
a state law that "colored passengers must seat from the rear to the front."
If there was alot of blacks on the bus, so much that we took up the front seats,
we had to give up our seats to any white passengers who boarded, whether it
was a black man or woman sitting.

I believe it was 1958 or thereabouts, but in Montgomery, Ala Mrs. Parks
refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man, where it was a law
also. By the way, those seating signs were on all the buses, and is one of
the images I'll never forget. Anyway, she was subsequently arrested for it,
and the incident drew the attention of a black minister named you-know-who!
A boycott was organized, and the rest is history.

A GOOD book is "The Ebony Pictorial History of Black America". I've got it
at home, and this weekend I'll make sure I've got the title right and other
stuff. It was published by Johnson Publishing Co. But it's a good book
I believe, for a quick and pictorial history of blacks in America. I should
have said books, because it's a three volume set, sort of like of a Life
magazine format, more pictures than text, but all facts and no rhetoric,
just straight history. check your library, and if you don't find it there,
I'll be glad to ship you my set to look at!!

I happen to think that it's wonderful that you would try to find out facts
and try to UNDERSTAND what happened. It's a lot better than asking Jesse
Helms to give you a history of blacks!! :-)

I'll wait for your mail path, and I'll furnish you the correct book info.
Apology to the rest of the net for posting rather than mailing!
