[net.politics] semantic vs. Semitic

parnass@ihuxf.UUCP (Robert S. Parnass, AJ9S @ Bell Labs, Naperville, IL) (11/03/83)

In another elightening USENET masterpiece, Mike Hodge
       asserts:

	---------------
"... as to the	difference between zionism
		 and semantism.
A semantic person is a Jew,a Zionist is a radical
terrorist using all of the tools of terror to	try
to achieve the	goals of the Jews. I myself am
		 anti-zionist	but not anti-semantic. I don't
support any terrorist group, but I have nothing
		 against the Jews"

	---------------

The American Heritage Dictionary	of the English Language1
       contains	the following entries:

o+ semantic - (adj.) Pertaining to meaning, esp. in
	    language.

	  o+ Semitic
	       o+ adjective
		   1. Of or pertaining	to the Semites,	esp. Jewish
		       or Arabic.
		   2. Pertaining to a subfamily of Afro-Asiatic,
		       including Arabic, Hebrew, and Aramaic.
	       o+ noun
		   1. The Semitic subfamily of	languages.
		   2. Any one of these	languages.

	  o+ Zionism
	      1. A plan or movement of	the Jewish people to return
		  to Palestine
	      2. A movement to	the re-establishment of a Jewish
national homeland and	a state	in Palestine.

Perhaps we should be discussing the public school system in
       America.	:-)

Please, let us DO discuss the educational system in this country.
Let us discuss the idea that everyone should be passed,
regardless of capability, so that they aren't marked
for life. Let us discuss the lessening dependance on such
"old fashioned" principles such as cause and effect, or
scientific method.

Later, I must needs work.

Yes !jj, we should discuss the educational system in the U.S.

But when we do, would you please learn how to spell dependance [sic]!

To use the well worn adage, "Is this the blind leading the blind?"

Sorry !jj, but I could not keep from reacting to that one.

as ever,

Re: anti-semanticism

Some of my best friend are semantic, Mr. Hodge, so watch your step.
