For those of you too skeptical to believe anything the President says, here is something on Grenada from Tip O'Neill (who ought to be far enough to the left for you to at least listen). ******************************* Washington - House Speaker Thomas O'Neill [D., Mass.], who earlier called President Reagan's invasion of Grenada "gunboat diplomacy," reversed himself Tuesday and said the President's actions were justified. After hearing the report of a congressional fact-finding group recently returned from Grenada, the speaker said the bipartisan delegation found that "a real potential threat" to American lives had existed in Grenada. "I believe that sending American forces into combat was justified under these particular circumstances," he said. *************************** Any comments from the Far Left?? I never thought of O'Neill as being particularly representative of the "left" or "liberal" wing of the Democratic party. I tended to think of him as a moderate. As far as his reversal of opinion, several commentators view it as O'Neill following the popularity of the invasion. I agree. Now if you told me that Cranston was in favor of the invasion, then I would have to wonder. Larry Welsch houxu!welsch

Yeah, I'll comment on O'Neill's flip-flop. The Democrats should have two priorities: (1) Defeat Reagan (2) Dump Tip Anyone who considers Tip O'Neill representative of the left is so far right as to have serious visibility problems much beyond Howard Baker. Tip is bankrupt. He represents the old-line, anti-Communist, huge bureaucracy Democrats. He stood up to Reagan for political reasons: he figured that 60% opposition to U.S. intervention in Central America would carry over to Grenada. When he found out it didn't, he flipped. If tomorrow Gallup published a poll showing increasing opposition to Grenada, Tip would be out flopping again. That's a complete lack of vision and principles. The position of Speaker is an enormously powerful one. With Tip out, more progressive forces in the Democratic Party would get their bills introduced, their committee hearings approved, their voices heard. Until Tip goes, the Democrats will be a sad hulk of a party. Mike Kelly ..!ihnp4!tty3b!mjk

"With Tip O'Neal out <something I agree with>, the progressives in the Democratic Party would be able get their proposals passed." OK. What sort of proposals did you have in mind? -- (allegra, harpo, ulysses)!rabbit!jj
