[net.politics] Our Ally, Britain, and McGhee

Just one quick comment. Don't use the American intervention in the
Phillipines as an example of how wonderful we are! If you accuse the
British for massacring Tasmanian natives, read again some histories
of our intervention in the Phillipines. We committed many atrocities
there in the sense of killing natives armed with spears only and
turning on our Filipino allies against the Spanish. In the latter
case, after beating the Spanish, we created pretexts for arresting,
torturing, and or killing the leaders of a free Phillipines movement
even though they fought side by side with our troops. This is one
of the sadder episodes in our history as a nation.

I may have other comments at a later date, but it seems to me for the
moment that although you have many of the incidents correctly cited,
your conclusions about our relationship with Britain are a little too
strong.
