In those days (it seems like centuries ago) I was an undergraduate music major at the University of Illinois. I had graduated from high school in Miami, Florida and my folks were still living in Florida so the crisis seemed very *real* to me then. There was the distinct possibility that even if we did not get into a nuclear exchange, that there would be a conventional war fought over Cuba which brought things pretty close to home. All I remember well was that I was very scared, anxious and dis- tracted. I had been a member of the Student Peace Union in high school and thought for sure that my worst fears were about to be confirmed. Like Dick Wexelblat, my reactions on resolution of the conflict were not so much that it was terrific that the Soviets had backed down in the face of superior American weapons and will, but that thank ghod the crisis had been averted, by both sides. -- Byron Howes UNC - Chapel Hill decvax!duke!mcnc!unc!bch
