diated at about 18khz. The purpose of this setup is alleged to be transmitting firing codes (frequency-shift- keyed) to submarines. There is a companion station on an island off of New England someplace which is somewhat more efficient due to better ground (salt water) and supposedly with the two stations they can "talk" (very slow code) to a sub anywhere in the world. The sub must come near the surface to receive the code, but does not break the surface. Does anybody know why this system is not considered adequate or if it is really true that the crew can fire the missiles without contact with land? Item #2 for comment: A friend of a friend is in the navy on a nuclear submarine. He (2nd-hand info to me) claims to have taken a geiger counter around the warheads and discovered that although every tube appeared to contain a real missile, the counter only registered on 2 or 3. At this point a superior caught him doing this and admitted that most of the missiles were dummies. If this is true then maybe our supposedly awsome invulnerable submarine - based offense isn't anywhere near what we have been led to believe. {Maybe "we" can only nuke "them" N times over instead of N*100 times :-) } Anybody know anything about this? Its all a game anyway... ---Dave Sherman ...{decvax!microsof,uw-beaver,allegra,lbl-csam,ssc-vax}!fluke!dms (maybe)
