[net.politics] BELIEFS AGAIN

wetcw@pyuxa.UUCP (T C Wheeler) (12/19/83)

Now, perhaps if some of you have trouble reading and understanding what
I am about to say, you should go back to the 4th grade and learn to
read for meaning again.

IF SOMEONE IS STANDING BEHIND ME AT A PARADE OR WHATEVER, AND I STAND TO
FACE THE FLAG OR WHATEVER, AND THE PERSON BEHIND ME MAKES REMARKS ABOUT
"MY" ACTIONS, I WILL INDEED PUNCH HIS LIGHTS OUT. The person can make all
the remarks he wants to about symbols, flags, whatever, but when he
tries to belittle my personal feelings, he must deal with me personally.

As I have been trying to point out to some of the numbskulls on this net,
DO NOT ATTACK A PERSONS BELIEFS. Pay attention now as I am only going to
say this one more time. Leave a persons feelings or beliefs out of
the discussion. If you want to rail against symbols, or whatever, rail
on. Just try to be mature enough to be able to separate your arguments.
Attacking a symbol is one argument, attacking someones beliefs is in
that symbol is a different argument. In fact, it is not even an
argument, it is the refuge of the immature when they can't find an
honest argument of their own.

As an example, you like dogs and I like cats. If I say that I like cats
and don't like dogs because dogs have bad breath and chase their tails,
your argument should not be that I am stupid. Your argument should
rely on the merits of the dog as opposed to the cat, or that dogs
have sweet breath and get good excercise form chasing their tails.
To just say that the cat person is stupid is not an argument, it is
an attack on the persons beliefs.

And finally, for all those who don't believe in symbols, how in the world
can you read or write? These little squiggles and lines are nothing
more than symbols used to represent thought so that it may be
communicated. I love the rationalizations that have appeared on
this net, especially when they are followed by the Peace symbol.

"You may fire when ready Griddley."
