Seems while we all here in the colonies have been sleeping off the effects of our holiday dinners, another colony (Australia) has been enjoying a scandal in its intelligence services. For intelligence agents, these guys were really stupid. A bunch of them went into the Melbourne Sheraton and started brandishing machine guns at guests and staff. Well, it *was* all in the performance of duty, as they were practicing their reactions to a hostage taking incident. Wonder if the targets knew that... Anyway, the Labour opposition is calling for the dismemberment of the spy service, claiming it an infringement on the democratic rights of a sovereign nation. So, people...here it is 1984, and Big Brother *is* watching you -- if we let him get away with it. Any comments?

The Australian intelligence adventure sounds a bit like our own Sherbrooke police, who a few days ago blazed away into a motel room without prior enquiry and killed a sleeping workman and injured his partner. Later they told the partner "It was all a mistake". No apology, no nothing -- yet. I doubt we have heard the last of that one, but I am a bit afraid all that will happen is a police reprimand, not a murder trial. -- Martin Taylor {allegra,linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd,ubc-vision}!utzoo!dciem!mmt
