[net.politics] John Anderson is running.

According to CBS News, the man from Illinois is going to try
again; now we can listen to hundreds of reporters asking all over again:

"But aren't you just being a spoiler and taking votes
from whomever the Democratic candidate is?"

One might as well ask the same question of a Republican candidate;
it has roughly the same meaning.

I'm sure, though, the the American public, dim-witted as it is,
will once again ignore the intelligence of J.A. -- whether or not they
agree with his platform -- and label him a 3rd-runner long before
November.

It's sort of like network television, you see; Democrats and
Republicans are akin to NBC, CBS, and ABC, while J.A. belongs more in
the category of PBS...quiet, non-self-aggrandizing, and able to deal
with complex issues without resorting to simplistic thinking.

Statements about the "dim-witted" American public aren't going to
get you too far in convincing the public, Darth, whoever you are.
Typical of the elitism of university people.

Why people think John Anderson is special has always baffled me.
He's the ultimate media candidate. His only appeal is that he
isn't a candiate of the Democrats or Republicans. But his
positions are as Republican as they come. He isn't different,
just packaged differently.

Yes, but I'm not attempting to sway people one way or the other,
at least not on the net; if I want to do campaigning, there are more
appropriate media for that.

And, sorry, but I do feel that the majority of the American public
is rather dim-witted--and that includes University populations as well.

	Your move.

Yes, Mr. Anderson is running again, trying to get his National Unity Party
on the ballot in at least 10 states. If he succeeds, his party is
eligible for a substantial amount of federal matching funds based on
his 1980 performance.

My questions:

Is there any point to this excersise? Does he really represent
a dramatic departure from the candidates of the established parties?
Or has he simply been bitten by the "Presidential Bug"?

If he does get the Federal $$$ it will be interesting to see if the
availabilty of this kind of money will have any impact on our 2 party
system (and if it does, how long it lasts).
