[net.politics] "Intellectual leaders"

riddle@ut-sally.UUCP (Prentiss Riddle) (01/06/84)

Leaving aside Mike's unexplained equation of "left-leaning" thought with
"intellectual subversion", we have the statement:

 >> We seem to be the only country whose 'intellectual leaders'
 >> don't like the country they live in.
 >> -- Mike Simpson msimpson@bbncca.UUCP

If you define "liking" your country as "being entirely satisfied with the
status quo" (the only definition of "like" by which this statement makes
any sense), then I can't think of a single country whose "intellectual
leaders" DO "like" the country they live in.

Well, one should probably not be simply satisfied with the status quo.
(One can make a point that anyone satisfied with the status quo just
isn't paying attention). But I was referring to is the fact that
European intellectual leaders (French, British, West German, ... ),
while they may be complain bitterly about government policies, at
least do talk up their country. American intellectuals don't generally
do this; they instead spend their time beating their breast and spouting
'mea culpa's for being American.
