(This is Part One of a two-part article.) A few days ago, I submitted an article inviting people to discuss (in this newsgroup or privately by mail) the national (US) deficit, the proposed budget, etc. Since then I have gotten a couple of takers. In order to stimulate more interest and provide more background material for people to work from, I am going to give a summary of the 1983 US budget below. Scott Pector (The following is from "Your Federal Income Tax: For Individuals, Publication 17," Department of the Treasury - Internal Revenue Service, Revised 10-83. It is reprinted without permission and I ask the tax gods to forbear their customary altar offerings and just be satisfied with inspiring myself and others interested in this topic to attempt "things yet unattempted in prose or rhyme." I'll still pay my taxes, though.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Government Dollar - Fiscal Year 1983 Where it came from: Where it went: Individual Income Taxes 0.36 *Income Security 0.35 Social Insurance Tax National Defense 0.26 and Contributions 0.26 Net Interest 0.11 Borrowing 0.25 *Health 0.10 Corporation Income Taxes 0.05 *Education, Training, and Excise Taxes 0.04 Social Services 0.03 Other Taxes 0.04 *Veterans 0.03 Transportation 0.03 Other 0.09 ------------------------------------- *Human Resources: 0.51 of each dollar The actual article in the IRS book gives more details, i.e., explains what each category is, how many $billions are in each category, breaks down the "other taxes" and "other" categories into several smaller groupings, etc. I have transcribed it in my second article immediately following this one (in Budget and Deficit Discussions - Part Two).
