[net.politics] are nukes suicidal?

I seem to recall hearing somewhere that if the USSR were to nuke
every one of our land-based missiles, unopposed by us, the resulting
dust cloud would cause a worldwide three-year nuclear winter.
Forgive me for repeating this if it was in this newsgroup.

If anybody else has heard it, can you cite a source? Is this claim
simply hysteria or is it something that could be mathematically
demonstrated? If there is a "proof" or documentation of any kind on
this, could you please send it or a reference to me?

			Many thanks,

Nuclear Winter: Global Consequences of Multiple Nuclear Explosions.
R.P.Turco, O.B.Toon, T.P.Ackerman, J.B.Pollack and Carl Sagan
Science, 23 Dec 1983, p1283-1292

Long-Term Biological Consequences of Nuclear War. (Many Authors)
Science, 23 Dec 1983, 1293-1300.

There was also a Russian study coming to the same conclusion, but I
don't know the reference. This is one matter on which US and Russia
agree.

There are indeed several studies which predict the "nuclear
winter". They were summarized in a recent *Science News*. I
don't have the volume and issue number here, but the summary was
published in 1983; the exact issue can be found in *Science
News's* 1983 index issue.

The study which Sagan participated in which predicted Nuclear Winter
was summarized in Science magazine, Dec 1983, page 1283.

If such a statement is true, then it surely verifies the absurdity of the
"need more nukes" philosophy of the Ray-Gun administration.
