Steve, first of all, though you meant it as an insult, I thank you for
crowning me King of the (crap)Hill. Truly, it is an honor that I don't
deserve. Alas, the net is sprinkled quite liberally with mounds much
more magnificent than mine (hint hint)!
I see no "apperant lack of facts" in my argument, but since you do, I
apparently must restate them:
- The federal government provides financial aid for indians on reservation
land, including subsidized housing, medical services, and education.
- Minority status is an advantage in obtaining college funding and a
professional occupation.
- Indian cultures are ethnocentic, which is a factor in indians remaining
or returning to the reservation.
- Not all tribes suffer through great economic hardships.
Da ta-Da ta-Da...!!! Here come the calvary!!!!
My argument is directed toward your original statement that indians are
"kept from society, quality education, jobs, professional occupations,
etc." It was not directed toward your "mental capacity" nor toward the
historical mistreatment of the American natives.
Also, folk, my argument is based on my personal experience (oh, like,
wow, man)! Having grown up in Tuscon and traveled quite a bit throughout
Arizona and New Mexico, I have not seen a reservation that could be called
a "concentration camp", nor have I seen "ghetto sub-standard housing",
as other netters have described.
Anyway, this argument has been fun. I just wanted to disagree with Steve's
original statement of natives being "kept from ...."
By the way, someone jabbed me with the line about me being able to say
that some of my friends are Americans. Well, in fact, one of my friends
in highschool was indian. I can remember - at a concert we went to, he
almost was arrested for... can you guess... scalping tickets.
