[net.music] Results Of "Longest Running Time For A Single Record"

< Aren't micro-grooves wonderful ! >

Here are the results of the survery I took on, to try to discover the longest
running time of a seven inch single that played at 45rpm. For those who did
not see the original posting, I have included the relevant part of it below.

The 33/45rpm single I own, for anybody that may be interested, is "Love Like A
Man" by Ten Years After. The 33rpm side is a live version, the 45rpm (A)side
being the studio version.

Ok, now you now what was happening here are the results:

7:06	Hey Jude The Beatles
6:44	Someone Saved My Life Tonight Elton John
6:33	Saftey Is A Cootie Wootie The Residents
6:20	Rock 'n' Roll Dreams Come Through	Jim Steinman
5:39	Total Eclipse Of The Heart Bonnie Tyler ??
4:39	Total Eclipse Of The Heart Bonnie Tyler

The last entry confused me a bit, so I put it in twice! (see below)

I thank all of you who took part.

As you have seen the rules, where I did ask not to have a "I belive/think"
time put in with an entry, I did not include them in the above list, but I
thought you may like to see the other entries and comments I recieved, so
here they are:

The Residents "White Single", which is a white 7", 45RPM record that
has an iris (like in your eye) for one label and comes in a clear sleeve
with red marks on it (think of a bloodshot eye), has a song on one
side called "Safety Is A Cootie Wooty", which is 6:33 long.

Hey Jude is probably the most famous long single, at 7:06, but Richard
Harris's MacArthur Park was longer (7:21 I believe). Unfortunately I don't
have the record and I can't remember the time, but I think George Harrison's
Isn't It A Pity (B side of My Sweet Lord) is even longer. (Someone who has
the LP, All Things Must Pass, could tell you for sure because the 45 version
is the same as the LP version.) Songs greater than 8 minutes in length, such
as Don McLean's American Pie and CCR's Suzie Q were split between the two
sides of the single, so that probably means that it's impossible to fit more
than 8 minutes on a 7" 45.

Well, let's see...

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" from Bonnie Tyler is 5:39. However, the time on
the single is 4:39.

"Goodnight Saigon" from Billy Joel is 5:48, I believe.

"Rock 'n' Roll Dreams Come Through" by Jim Steinman is 6:20, if you include
the angelical chorus at the end. There is a track in between and the song
fades out and the starts up again for the chorus. But it's still about 5:45.

And, just to break the rules, "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights"
was 5:something.

Beatles' single "Hey Jude" was about 7 minutes long in 1968.

Well, I can`t give you the EXACT running time, but "American Pie",
Don McLean, was at least 6:30 and I wouldn`t doubt if it were
over 7 minutes. The record, alas, since its purchase, had become
scratched beyond acceptable limits, and somehow was lost. Oh, to
have that back.

As I remember, 'Hey Jude' was over 7 minutes. The time that
I remember is 7 minutes 11 seconds, but my copy is long gone
so I can't verify that.

"Someone saved my life tonight" Elton John 6:44

Now I couldn't have a poll by getting people to send me mail, and then for
me to edit a few files and put it on the net without doing anything myself.
I decided to go through my own single collection and find what I had that
I considered a long running time. I mentioned at the top of this posting
that it was only a few years ago that you were lucky to get 4 minutes of a
song on a single, so I used that as my lowest time in the list below. I think
that you will find that most of the records are no more than about 2-3 years
old. The thing that did surprise me was that the flip sides of records were,
in the majority, longer than the "A" side. I therefore have denoted these
"B"sides with a "*".

BTW I make the total running time of American Pie 8:42 ! Both sides are
    listed.

So without further a-do here is my own list:

There were a great deal of records that did not make the list because they
were only one or two seconds short of the 4:00 cut-off I used.

If there are a few groups you havn't heard of before don't worry about it.
My record collection started a long time ago in England, and some of the
groups never "made it" accross the pond!

If you got down to this part of the posting without giving up. I thank you,
and I hope you enjoyed it. If by some chance you would like to know what
the "A" side of one of the "B" sides was please mail me and I will send the
information on.
