Well, it seems that Jesse Jackson's true nature has finally been exposed in the national media. After 2 weeks of denying that he made remarks calling Jews "Hymies" (as an aside, Jackson shouldn't use such anachronistic slurs), Mr. Morality finally owned up. Of course, he added that he "is not anti-semitic," and referred to the remark as "...not in the spirit of meanness." Right now, we are being urged by Mr. Jackson to "forgive and redeem." No way, Jesse. Sam Cramer ..fortune!nsc!yoavh

Oh foo. Come *off* of it, *Please!!* Quite frankly, I don't see what the fuss was about. The man said that he didn't say it out of meanness- if he had, there are one hell of a lot of other words that he could have used- like kike, or sheenie, for instance. Not only was the word mild (for God's sake, it's just a nickname, like calling someone a "johnny"!) but Mr. Jackson came out, admitted that he said it, and I thought he apologised rather abjectly to a *synagogue* audience. Be serious, man! Unfortunately, many Jewish people seem to think that if anyone wants to listen to what the Arabs have to say, or to simply communicate with the PLO that he or she is some sort of an anti-Semite. Wake up! I can disagree with the policies of Israel without being a Jew-hater, just as surely as you can disagree with me without being a racist. Anti-Semite? Foo. You are seeing the world through eyes that are even more paranoid than my own. -- _______________________________________________________________________________ From the oftimes fiery but seldom understood keyboard of the dark avenger Jobe (...!uw-beaver!ssc-vax!jobe)

John Jobe states: "I can disagree with the policies of Israel without being a Jew-hater, just as surely as you can disagree with me without being a racist." I agree. However, that's not the point. I never suggested that Jackson is an anti-semite because he disagrees with Israeli policy. I suggested that Jackson is an anti-semite because he says anti-semitic things. The most telling part of this whole incident is being ignored: Jesse Jackson's bald-faced lying. "It is simply not true, and I think the accuser ought to come forth." Jesse Jackson, Feb 19 1984, Face The Nation "Mr. Jackson said today that his delay in acknowledging the remark was based on two considerations. 'On the one hand, I had a desire to keep open the doors that were open; on the other hand I did not want to lie and be absolute,' he said, indicating that his previous statements that he did not remember using the word were not misrepresentations." I think that Anti-Semite is carrying it a bit too far. What the hell is a "Hymie"? Well, I confess that I didn't know. So I lay low for a time to seek enlightenment. Conclusions as follow - A HYMIE seems to be an unfeeling but innocuous slur to use. One of the contributors to net.religion.jewish signs himself as a "Hymie from Hymie-town". It seems that in terms of severity, its no worse than calling an Irish person a Paddy or a Mick. Unfeeling to be sure, but hardly bigoted. If you wish to criticize Jesse Jackson, pick on his total lack of a realistic program, or the like ... but keep the accusations out of it. In passing, I seem to recall from Newspaper articles that some members of Jewish organizations had in fact been attacking Jackson from the start. Before anyone starts laying in on me for Anti-Semitism/Racism - I never met a Semite (Jewish or otherwise) nor a Black until I was old enough to realise the absurdity of preconceptions. The vestigal prejudices I know I have, deal with a totally different situation altogether (And I'm not telling you what they are!) ---- You think having a presidential candidate refer to somebody as a "Hymie" is pretty innocuous? I think the corresponding term for a black would be a "Sambo" (stereotype based on somebody's name). I doubt that Jackson would appreciate that one... Jim Gillogly
