[net.politics] Proposal: a radical change in US military policy.

rf@wu1.UUCP (03/26/84)

Suppose the United States of America were to drop all but a few
nuclear missiles for use as a deterrent and maintain only the
forces necessary to meet its treaty obligations. What would be
the result?

My first thought was that the U.S. would be invaded. My second
thought was: by the Mexicans? That's ridiculous!

Even without a standing army, the US can raise an army. And the
US is an armed nation! Many civilians own weapons and could
make an invader's life amazingly difficult. A less-armed US
might loose a war to an invader, but I can't imagine any invader
holding the US for long.

So, what do you think? Please, let's try to discuss the
military and political consequences without flaming.
