I did not say that forming a contract obligated both parties to renew said contract forever, and most of the analogies presented (i.e., giving a bum $1 one day might obligate you to give them $2 the next) were worthless. Face it -- going to college without getting a degree is unprofitable (if not exactly useless). If a student invests all his financial resources and several of his years under a program that would make it possible for him to attend college, and thereafter that program is cut, he has wasted his own resources because of false pretensions from the government (our program will make it possible for you to go to college is more commonly heard than "you will be able to attend college for one year, and then maybe, through no fault of your own, the aid will be cut and your year will have been wasted. I am not saying that the student necessarily deserves aid -- but once he has committed himself to a plan by accepting it, he has cause to feel screwed if the rug is pulled from under his feet.
