I'm surprised there has been so little discussion of Ed Meese in this
group! I recall seeing only one article describing him as a "reprobate".

Meese stated (NY Times, 3/25) that he never thought the $15,000 loan
would cause any problems with his confirmation. Of course not - he
didn't think anyone would find out about it! And now he says that
there is no connection between bank officials (6 known to date) bailing
him out financially and their subsequent hiring by the government. If
you believe a word of that, I've got a bridge (make that a "Cuban
military airport") to sell you...

I suspect that Meese's call for an independent prosecutor (to "clear [his]
name of these vicious, politically-motivated allegations") is either an
attempt to call Metzenbaum, et.al.'s bluff or a stalling tactic.

Bert Lance was forced to resign over less serious allegations (at least
he didn't give government jobs to his banking cronies); the Senate should
likewise reject Meese's confirmation. While his actions may not have
technically violated any laws, the shady deals uncovered cast serious
doubt on his fitness to be the nation's chief law enforcement official.

While I don't particularily suspect Meese of any wrongdoing (nor,
for that matter, am I convinced that he is as pure as the driven snow), I
think the qualification of Caesar's wife might apply here. Or is that
not true, considering the faith we all have in our government?
