[net.politics] Oh Henry!

Redundancy may be necessary

Reading in one of the local papers today, I noticed a picture
of a Henry Kissinger "greeting party" in S.F. being harrassed (and
assaulted) by mounted police officers. Unfortunately, the article was
very short, saying only that those present (aside from the cops, I
presume) were dismayed with U.S. policy in Central America and that
Kissinger was to speak in the area.
Does anyone have any further info. as to the size of the demo.,
if it was organized by a particular group, where Kissinger was to
speak, and on what topic?

                    Thanks,
                        Cameron Anderson

A month ago we had a similar event here in Austin. No mounted police,
fortunately, but 53 protesters were arrested, some in a manner that was
far from gentle. Kissinger was here to speak at a forum on nuclear
issues. The protest was organized by CISPES, the Committee in
Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, and was supported by a
coalition of many local peace and anti-interventionist groups. Several
hundred protesters took part. The beefs against Kissinger are too many
for me to recount; they include the allegation that his activities in
the Vietnam era qualify him as a war criminal, as well as outrage at
his recommending similar policies toward Central America today.

If anyone wants to know more about the protest and its consequences,
let me know. It's a hot local issue, but I don't want to bore the net
with unnecessary detail that doesn't mean anything outside of Austin.
