It seems to me that Jesse Jackson's candidacy, like him or not, is having a positive influence on voter registration and voter turnout. Unless I am misreading the signs in the news media, many more people, blacks in particular, are registering for the vote as Jackson's candidacy continues. And those people are also turning out to vote. This has got to be good for the workings of the political system in this country - noticable numbers of voters who have previously not felt motivated to involve themselves in the political process are now participating. Much of this seems attributable to the fact that Jackson's candidacy, rather than being essentially a sham, is is fact gathering momentum and gaining respectability. Now let's hope that these people will continue to stay involved in the process. I am always thoroughly disgusted to find out how small a percentage of the eligible, voting-age population actually voted for the eventual winner any any given election.
