Bernard Lewis in his book The Emergence of Modern Turkey, which is sympathetic to Turkey, describes in passing three separate massacres of Armenians in 1894-96, in 1909, and in 1915. He also mentions that the government was worried about world public opinion. The slaughter of Armenians was well known at the time. World public opinion just was unable to do much about it. Blaming the Turks solely for slaughtering the Armenians is not completely correct. Many Kurdish Muslims took part because the Muslims viewed the action as punishment for upstart dhimmis. Many Armenian children were taken and raised as Muslims. This child-kidnapping is evidence that the massacre was a fairly normative Muslim massacre of non-Muslims.
