References: I believe that the Sandinistas announced that elections would take place in 1985 way back in 1979 or 1980, therefore there is no reason to attack them for not holding elections thus far. They are just following the timetable that they laid out 5 years ago. Also, one thing that definitely gets in the way of holding elections is the war that the US is engaged in against Nicaragua. (yes, the US, not the so-called "freedom fighters" in Honduras and Costa Rica). Of course no matter when elections are held in Nicaragua, the US will no doubt declare them a fraud, thus legitimizing their continued war effort. Also, if you want to get on someone's case for not holding or even planning elections, try Chile (remember the CIA in 1973?). Old Pinochet will not hold elections until 1990! If we're going to pressure Nicaragua to hold elections, it would be hypocritical to not put the same pressure on Chile to do the same. But wait! I forgot that they're our *friends*. Sigh. As for the Miskito Indians, one has to ask why they had to be "relocated" in the first place? The Miskito had the misfortune to live on the Atlantic/Honduran border, one of the places where the US is waging its war. The US knows that the Miskito were not extemely active in the revolution and were thus a perfect group to target in their war effort. I believe that the Sanidinistas treatment of the Miskito would have been quite different had the US not used the targeted the Miskito as a way into Nicaragua. If you try to tell me that the Reagan Administration is really concerned about the Miskitos, I'd argue that they are only interested in the Miskitos insofar as they can be used in the war against Nicaragua. Another question worth thinking about is this: Where do you think Nicaragua would be without the US war at its borders? Steve Wall ..ucbvax!ucbarpa!wall
