[net.politics] Legislating morality

I see that the powers that be will probably get the drinking age raised
to 21. And that the motion picture whosits want a 'pg13' to keep the
under thirteen year-olds out of the more violent movies (now how do we
keep them from watching th 'a-team'- or the 'six o'clock news'?). Now
I see that someone would like to slap stickers on music that might
have 'suggestive' lyrics, and to keep the younger listeners from buying
them. Now wait a minute...how young is too young to listen to 'suggestive'
lyrics? And how do we keep the youngsters from just taping whatever they
can't buy? Have only non-suggestive songs on AM radio, and restrict the
sales of FM radios? Fit them with itty-bitty earplugs that emit a 60 hz
tone whenever a 'suggestive' lyric is transmitted? And once we get rid
of all the songs with suggestive lyrics, what next? Songs that advocate
the overthrow of the government? Ones that clash with right-wing 'gimme
your money please' Christians?

Raising the drinking age may keep some kid from smashing into my van
and killing me, and keeping them out of violent movies may keep them
from shooting me, but what does keeping them from hearing 'suggestive'
lyrics do? (don't say rape, that is case #2)
