In an action which could best be described as a brash political statement, President Reagan appointed Anne Burford to an advisory committee on environmental matters pertaining to the oceans and atmosphere. Burford (nee Gorsuch) was head of the EPA, appointed by Reagan, a while back. She was forced to resign under heavy criticism of her policies and actions in the EPA post. Notably, she took flak from both sides for actions that were allegedly often inconsistent, contradictory, and unpredictable. Reagan has made it clear by this latest appointment that he isn't going to be influenced by national opinion very much in his appointments. He has used the Burford appointment as a show of force - a sort of political muscle-flexing, indicating that he understands all too well the fact that it would be hard for him to make a big enough blunder to lose in November. (Of course, this situation has been well helped along by the Democratic cosmic wimpout in the Presidential race.) -- Dick Dunn {hao, ucbvax, allegra}!nbires!rcd (303)444-5710 x3086 ...Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.
