  . . . Both views
seem consistent with trying to get religion out of what is basically a non-
religious process [the presidential election].

Perhaps someone should mention this to Jesse Jackson?

From T.C. Wheeler:
>It seems that Ms Ferraro has opened the door for character
>assasination by saying that RR was not Christian. In the
>same breath, she said she did not want anyone to mention
>that her being Catholic was anything to talk about during
>the campaign. Looks like she has set up a double standard
>already. In her eyes, it is ok to question RR's religeous
>preference or lack thereof, but don't question hers...

She may have been a little sloppy in the statement, but it's hardly a
double standard. Reagan likes to have himself identified as a good,
God-fearing Christian - which he might be occasionally in word but seldom
in public action. Ferraro would like to get rid of the idea (stretching a
bit) that people should vote for Reagan because he's a good Christian. She
would also like to get rid of the idea that people should vote for her, or
more likely against her (remember JFK) because she's Catholic. Both views
seem consistent with trying to get religion out of what is basically a non-
religious process.
