My immediate reaction to seeing Reagan's campaign appearances in Texas on TV yesterday was that I had seen such rallys before . . . . on newsreels from Germany in the 1930's. The demagogery, eloquent, polished speech with no room for human reactions or feelings, and the reaction of the crowd all were similar. At a teacher's conference in Indiana this past fall, Ronald Wilson Reagan had the teachers cheering for legislation that they strongly opposed, both individually and as an organization. If any of you notice a family resemblance of a Reagan campaign rally and a Nazi war rally, I would urge you to invest a few minutes to call your favorite TV station or the White House at (202) 456-1414. Ask them why do Reagan's campaign apperances resemble Nazi war rallys from 1938 or 39. Bill Smith ihnp4!mhuxi!princeton!siemens!wws P.S. For those of you who are more "superstitious," count the number of letters in each of Reagan's 3 names and then tell me that they don't stand for the number 029Ah.

#R:siemens:-23900:uicsl:21700003:000:959 uicsl!keller Jul 29 15:38:00 1984 Dear Sir: Why do your political meetings resemble Nazi rallys? Sincerely yours, Shaun Keller --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Mr. Keller: Frankly I don't know what to say to you. We don't get many letters like yours and to be compared to something as evil as the Nazi empire is really shocking. I can only respond by saying that if you will take some time to study our political philosophy you will discover that we are freedom and peace loving people trying to promote democracy at home and abroad. Sure we have a troubled foriegn policy and a trend toward big government, but that hardly makes us war mongers or facists. Here's hoping that you'll come to understand us. Yours for freedom, RR ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ps I guess that I should tell you that I made this up or you might think that it is a real exchange of letters.

Yours for freedom, RR ************* Except for the explicit reference to the Nazi party, this sounds very like the things Hitler ACTUALLY said! The "letter" was supposed to show how silly the question was about why Reagan rallies look like Hitler rallies. I thought it was a silly question, too, but that letter got me to be thinking again .... -- Martin Taylor {allegra,linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd,ubc-vision}!utzoo!dciem!mmt
